Meg Whitman for Governor 2010

“Restoring California will not be easy. It will take time to uproot old habits… old ways of thinking… and old ways of doing business. But do it we can, and do it we must, because we all love California too much to let it fail. ”
Meg Whitman

  • A New California: Rebuilding the Dream.
Where Do We Start?"Think about all California has contributed to America and the world…Californians have led the way in the fields of entertainment, agriculture, aerospace, defense, medicine, technology, biotech and so much more.  We have always been on the cutting edge of progress… of everything new, of everything hip.Our task today is to ensure that California remains on that cutting edge.  We’ve got to fix the state’s economy.  We’ve got to start creating jobs again.  We’ve got to bring taxes into line with what hard working Californians can afford, and not what government demands.  And we’ve got to treat education and the environment like the priorities they should be." - Meg Whitman

  • What is A New California?  Simple.  It’s the combination of the Golden State’s rich heritage, natural beauty and optimistic people combined with a future where we have the strongest economy, best schools, solid infrastructure and quality of life.California used to be the envy of the world delivering limitless opportunity and prosperity. But we lost our focus and our leaders have failed to get it back.  Meg believes that we can and must work together and take action to restore the state’s standing as a global leader.
  • The Business of Job Creation“My number one goal as governor will be to help the private sector create 2 million jobs for Californians by 2015.  This is the amount we need if we’re going to replace the jobs our economy has stopped producing or is losing to neighboring states.  It’s the target we need to hit if we’re going restore prosperity.” - Meg WhitmanCalifornia has lost hundreds of thousands of jobs, and the unemployment rate is more than 10 percent. This is unacceptable for a state that is famous for its vibrant economy and its resourceful and innovative entrepreneurs.  Meg knows what it takes to create jobs.  As President and CEO of eBay she helped the company grow from 30 employees to more than 15,000; even more impressive is the fact that some 1.3 million people make part, if not all, of their living selling on eBay.  As Governor, Meg would focus her energy and experience to help turn California back into a job-creating powerhouse by:
  • Streamlining the permitting and approval processes to make it easier for businesses to expand or locate in California
  • Eliminating inefficient and unnecessary regulations that increase business costs, decrease competitiveness and threaten California jobs
  • Lowering taxes to give businesses the incentive to invest, innovate, hire more workers and prosper

  • A New California: Government Reform and Savings
    Making Government Serve the People
“We need to change the mindset of the entrenched bureaucracy.  Instead of rewarding red tape, we should reward government officials who dramatically increase efficiency.   California’s government should be run more like a business.  At a time when businesses and families are drastically cutting budgets, Sacramento must do the same.” - Meg Whitman
Government spending has grown eighty percent in the last ten years, but as the latest budget crisis proves, state government is as unresponsive and dysfunctional as it has ever been.  The people deserve better.  As Governor, Meg would institute a series of reforms to make government more efficient and effective.  Meg will:
    • Commit to at least $15 billion in savings and efficiencies within 4 years
    • End runaway spending by implementing a sustained government spending freeze
    • Reduce the size of government while making it more responsive and productive

  • From Worst to First“If we don’t rededicate ourselves to education with the same attitude Americans have applied to going to the moon and fighting wars, the results will be profound.  We will gradually lose our successful workforce.  Our ability to innovate and create the next generation of companies and jobs in California – to create the next eBay, the next Google, the next Genentech – will diminish.” - Meg Whitman
  • California spends about half of its budget – around $50 billion - on K-12 education every year, but our schools are stuck near the bottom of every performance measure.  This is unfair to taxpayers, to parents, and especially to our children.  Meg knows we can do much better, and as Governor will:
    • Give students and parents more choice and control by expanding charter schools
    • Reward success by giving more pay to high-performing teachers
    • Make California’s schools the nation’s leaders in Math, Science and the other bedrock skills needed to succeed in the 21 century economy

  • Use Alternative Energy“The environment of our state is simply too close to our hearts and too dear to our children.  But we need to apply balance and common sense.  We can’t impede progress in the name of environmental action that yields little for the environment and even less for our people….and we should look at the environment as an economic opportunity.” - Meg Whitman
  • Meg is committed to doing what is right for the environment of California.  But that doesn’t mean we have to harm employers or the economy - quite the opposite.  Common sense will lead the way with enforcement of current laws and a commitment to the development of alternative energy solutions. California should be the incubator of research for the environment and energy; we should be the center of the global “green” economy. This will encourage research and development investments and jobs, strengthening California’s economy.  Meg is committed to:
    • Applying balance and common sense to make regulations pay the biggest dividends for our environment and our people
    • Using tax incentives and favorable regulations to make California the undisputed leader in alternative energy and clean-technology jobs

  •

  • The Opportunity to Achieve our Goals.
“If we’re going to change the destiny of our state, Republicans have to capture the imagination of all Californians. We have to be viewed as the party of leadership.  I believe Republican ideals, truly and consistently applied, will save this state.  And I hope my candidacy will spur renewed interest and excitement in the Republican Party.” - Meg Whitman

California is famously diverse.  People from every corner of the globe come to these shores because above and beyond the American dream is something even more special; the California Dream.   Meg wants everyone to understand that Republican ideas – smaller government, economic opportunity, personal freedom – have made California the place where so many have achieved so much.   The Republican Party wants all Californians to reach their dreams, and Meg invites everyone to join her in supporting the principles that have made our state the world’s destination for success:
  • America is a nation of free men and women motivated by economic opportunity to achieve great things.
  • Government’s role in our lives should be limited.  Small, efficient government that enforces smart policies can be good.
  • Ultimately, government can only help create some of the conditions for prosperity.  Prosperity itself is up to each of us.

A New California: Embrace A New California
Diversity Is Our Strength

"Only then will California be restored to the place we all know.  A place where our communities are strong and our dreams can come true…A place where starting a business is the thrill of a lifetime…A place where the weather, the mountains, and the open fields have inspired generations of Americans…And a place where diversity is strength Where anyone who has the courage to come, work hard, play by the rules, and contribute to the community can live the American dream." - Meg Whitman

California’s greatest strength is the diversity of its people.  As we restore California and rebuild its prosperity, it is crucial that our success extend throughout our Golden State – to those who are new to the state as well as those who’ve lived here for generations.  With a shared vision and sense of purpose that brings us together, Meg is committed to forging A New California that is strong, resilient, prosperous and…uniquely Californian by:
  • Harnessing the latest technology to connect Californians, particularly 18-29 year olds that are our future leaders and innovators
  • Engaging California’s vibrant and growing Latino community that shares our values and dedication to the Golden State
  • Reaching out to and getting more women to be active in public service as they have a unique perspective and strong commitment to restoring California’s prosperity
